Hi! This is me, @ananyasaraf.design‘s personal art and design exhibit agenda for the month; shared here because art and organised grids (two things sitting conveniently high on my list of interests) now felt worthy of an audience.

I’m drawn to contemporary art and design, especially the ones that makes me physically move, look twice. The kind that makes my brain tingle.

This list focuses on Kolkata since I’m based here, with occasional exhibits from other cities I plan to visit (and as my chronically online self digs deeper.) Do reach out if I miss anything :)

Long Term Exhibitions

Presented by Ambica Beri and Richa Agarwal | | | 16 July – 19 September | Grid for a Disappearance | Experimenter, Ballygunge Place | Biraaj Dodiya | It felt like a successor to Experimenter’s previous show, Soumya Sankar Bose’ “We Need to Talk in Whispers”. I related both shows’ themes of evidence, absence, injury, and the recurring motif of beds slept in.

While Bose looked at it from an investigative eye, Dodiya looked at the themes from a clinical and medical lens. Slightly disturbing at first, the idea of the hospital beds acting like sites of holding stories, change, and what has happened, as generative and not something to mourn felt interesting. Then there were also points where the hospital bed frames felt like barricades and railings to me. Like boundaries, broken then repaired. | | 17 July – 19 October | Lone Runner’s Laboratory | Experimenter Outpost, Alipore Museum | Prabhakar Pachpute | | | 20 July – 12 August | Gopal Ghose: A Pioneer of Modern Indian Art | Ganges Art Gallery | Gopal Ghose | | | 20 July – 16 September | Where Do I Pause | Trace Art Gallery | Raj Chowdhury | My experience of this exhibition was completely truly shaped by the current Indian political scenario and the student protests in Delhi — coincidentally, and in the best way possible. The works felt like they had a childlike wonder to it, like the last page of a school student’s exercise book filled with expressive thoughts. Except here, many were embedded with political reflections on democracy through writings and doodles. Like a student questioning in their own ways the workings of politics and the world. It’s not visually dark or disturbing, it feels honest, serious without feeling solemn (which honestly summed up the Gen Z protests for me). | | 24 July – 1 August | Threads Become a Story | Kolkata Centre for Creativity, Ground Floor | Gaurang Shah | | | | a dozen (or so) ways to draw a tree | Birla Academy of Art & Culture | Sujaan Mukherjee | |
